Earthquake Nepal 2015

Aardbeving Nepal : Heropbouw project Ratankot / Sindupalchuk

On April 25, 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale took place in Nepal near the capital, Kathmandu. On May 12, 2015 a second earthquake, 7.3 on the Richter scale, occurred. Aid organisations and local nonprofit organisations including our partners, the "Pelmo Porong Choeding Monastery" and "Green Tara charitable organisation" took immediate action to provide support and relief to the victims of this disaster.

Earthquakes between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Kodari have caused extensive damage in Nepal. The death toll above 8000 deaths, with much more wounded and hundreds of thousands of Nepali who lost their homes. The district in which we operate reported 95% of the homes being badly damaged or totally destroyed.

  • Short-term actions:

All relevant organisations that work closely with Pema Dorjee started an immediate fundraising to provide emergency assistance. An example of this relief, the Israeli organisation IsraAID started the construction of 235 temporary shelters.

  • Long-term plans:

With Support4Nepal we committed to put our focus on the sustainable reconstruction of the mountain village Ratankot. We believe that our partners, who are deeply rooted in the local community, are in the best position to provide long-term support to the victims of this disaster. By financing and working in close cooperation with our local partner organisations, we have the potential to deliver strong disaster response capability with a lasting effect. Post reconstruction, to retain the memory of the earthquake and to continue to build safe in future, training sessions to be organised at the anniversary of the earthquake every year.

  • Project development:
  • Conduct research into earthquake-proof building techniques
    • Low impact (using local materials)
    • Eco (natural materials)
    • Low budget (achievable through local materials)
    • Self-reliance (Intaking and natural filtering of rainwater)
    • Hygiene (integration of a smokeless stove, repair of broken toilets)

  • Conduct research about the soil stability and the danger of mudslides.

  • Stimulation and coordination of the involvement of the local community

  • Within this project we seek the empowerment of local people. In this way we will focus mainly on cooperative development. More specifically, we want to co-create the needed knowledge and skills. Public participation in the planning and implementation is therefore of great importance.

  • We want to bring independency of external organizations through our actions in Ratankot. One example is that we strive to use only local and natural material (with respect for nature and a focus on sustainability). In this way we want to achieve that the community of Ratankot can continue using these techniques on a standalone basis.
