On April 25, 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale took place in Nepal near the capital, Kathmandu. On May 12, 2015 a second earthquake, 7.3 on the Richter scale, occurred. Aid organisations and local nonprofit organisations including our partners, the "Pelmo Porong Choeding Monastery" and "Green Tara charitable organisation" took immediate action to provide support and relief to the victims of this disaster.
Earthquakes between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Kodari have caused extensive damage in Nepal. The death toll above 8000 deaths, with much more wounded and hundreds of thousands of Nepali who lost their homes. The district in which we operate reported 95% of the homes being badly damaged or totally destroyed.
All relevant organisations that work closely with Pema Dorjee started an immediate fundraising to provide emergency assistance. An example of this relief, the Israeli organisation IsraAID started the construction of 235 temporary shelters.
With Support4Nepal we committed to put our focus on the sustainable reconstruction of the mountain village Ratankot. We believe that our partners, who are deeply rooted in the local community, are in the best position to provide long-term support to the victims of this disaster. By financing and working in close cooperation with our local partner organisations, we have the potential to deliver strong disaster response capability with a lasting effect. Post reconstruction, to retain the memory of the earthquake and to continue to build safe in future, training sessions to be organised at the anniversary of the earthquake every year.
